Thomas Jones Appointed President of Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity
McConnell Jones recognizes Thomas Jones, Tax Partner, for his appointment to the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity. As President of the board, Jones will lead the initiative of raising $25 million through private donations, aimed at accelerating transformative change by supporting under-resourced Houston nonprofits that empower and uplift the Black community. The Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity will contribute to nonprofit efforts and have a venture capital arm focused on minority entrepreneurs.
Mayor Sylvester Turner also joins the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity as Honorary Chair. During the announcement event at Emancipation Park on May 20, 2021, Mayer Turner said “This is a critical time for our city and quite frankly the country. It is imperative that we come together and address system inequalities in black and brown communities.”

Juneteenth Recognized as National Holiday
On Thursday, June 17th, President Joe Biden signed a bill to recognize Juneteenth as a Federal holiday.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in Texas and has been celebrated since 1886. Throughout history, Juneteenth has been known by many names: Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, and today it is a National Holiday. Juneteenth celebrations originate in Galveston, and Texas was the first state to officially recognize the date in 1980.
At McConnell Jones, we recognize Juneteenth as an important commemoration of Black Independence and the progress we continue to strive for. With such deep ties to Texas, Juneteenth has become a cultural pillar in our local communities. We encourage everyone to use this Juneteenth to learn about African-American Heritage and the history of this holiday.
